Kia ora, there will be a mufti day and bake sale tomorrow to support our 20! student athletes that are attending the Central North Island Area Schools coaching clinic in their chosen sport.
All bake items will be $2

Canteen message

We have been advised that due to staff leave the canteen will need to be closed from 9th of March to 15th of March. Students will need to bring lunch to school on these days. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

We have been notified that Tk6 is running 25mins late this morning.

Junior School Tabloids – for all students in Y1-6.

Our Junior School Tabloids are now able to go ahead this Friday during Period 3 and 4 in the school pool. Can students please come to school in uniform as we will start our fun events in period 3.

Students can pack house coloured clothes to change into and wear over their swimming togs when they are not in the pool. Please name all items of clothing and towels.  We look forward to an awesome afternoon of fun!

Maaori whaanau hui

Maaori Whaanau class hui is being held Monday 6th March at 7pm here at school. Kaupapa for the hui is feedback on how the class is working and what leadership looks like in te ao maaori. Your children do not have to be in the class to attend, all maaori families are welcome. Students are welcome to attend as well. Nau mai, haere mai.

Year 7&8 Netball Trials

The Year 7 & 8 Netball trials have been postponed until after school on Monday due to the forecasted weather for this afternoon. 

Senior Tabloids

Senior Tabloids are going ahead this afternoon. These may not carry over into period four if the weather deteriorates. 

Junior Tabloids Postponed

We have made the decision to postpone the junior tabloids this morning as it is very cold. We hope to be able to reschedule next week and will let you know.

We will make a decision about if the senior tabloids will go ahead this afternoon by 11am and let you know.

NON UNIFORM DAY AND ICE CREAM SALES TOMORROW

Kia ora! Tomorrow our Senior Volleyball team is holding a non uniform day and Ice cream sale! Please bring a gold coin to support them if you want to come in casual clothes. The ice cream sales will happen at Break 1 on the Junior courts AND in front of the hospitality room. $2 a scoop.
Our senior girls have been training and playing hard in their lead up to Volleyball Nationals. Thank you for your support 🙂

Te reo Classes

Matua Rima is running community te reo classes. Beginner classes are held at 7pm at Tuakau Primary. Intermediate/advance lessons are held at 7pm here at OAS. Lessons cost $7.50 a lesson. Everyone is welcome.

Reminder – Whaanau Teacher Interviews

Just a reminder that Whaanau Teacher Interviews start at 2.00pm tomorrow. 

We will come off timetable for the time period between 2.00-3.00pm. All students who need to stay until 3.00pm will be supervised. 
You are welcome to come and sign your child/ren out from the office as per the usual process from 1.45pm.

Buses will run as normal at the end of the day. 

Ag day meeting

Ag day meeting has been moved due to clashes with other community meetings. New date is Monday 27th at 7pm in Staffroom. Ag day is an important day in our annual calendar and we need your help to plan another amazing day. So come long and see what it is all about.

All buses are now running as normal.

All buses are running again, however, TK2 & TK3 are not able to do their Port runs due to the roads still being closed.

Netball registrations close tomorrow!

All year 5-13 students can play netball for the school. Year 7/8 players can trial for our AIMS team, that plays together in the Saturday competition. Netball trials are next week!              There will be separate trials for our UNISS team in a few weeks.

School Reopening Information

Kia ora e te whaanau,

Firstly our thoughts go to Port Waikato and other areas that have received significant damage to the area. We know parts of our community and staff have significant damage to clean up in their homes and backyards over the next few days and weeks.

Tomorrow the school will be open for on site learning with the majority of classes running as normal. There are a small number of classes that will need to be split into other classes due to an absence of staff to cover them. 

The following information about buses is based on the information we have at this time:

At this stage it’s looking like the buses will have some disruptions to their normal routes. The buses that cover Port Waikato-Tuakau Bridge Road and Port Waikato area will not be able to run. These are the routes for TK 3 and TK 2 buses. Students on these buses will need to be dropped and picked up from school provided they live in sections where the roads are cleared.

At this stage TK1, 4, and 9 that travel the stretch of road between Klondyke Road and the village will not be able to go over this section of road, so will go down Kauri/Hunt road and come up the hill from the bridge. This means the times for these buses will be later.

Students that normally take TK1 in the morning and get off at the bridge will need to stay on the bus until it does its second run back up to the school. 

TK 6 students in the morning who are dropped at the bridge will be collected by TK 1 on its second run back up to the school. There is a longer waiting time for these students, so please be aware of this. 

As we gain more information from the council about the conditions of the roads, we will update the bus company and communicate any changes to the routes over the next few days. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause

We are aware that everyone’s circumstances are different and that there may be many students who will not be able to get to school tomorrow or who are needed at home to help with cleaning up. Please do not worry about this, but if you or someone you know, could notify the office then this will prevent unnecessary absence notification texts from going out.

We hope that you are safe after the cyclone has gone through. The Senior Leadership team are meeting today to discuss re opening. We are aware of severe road damage in the area and this will be key in our assessment for opening. We hope to have a decision to you by 3pm today.

After reviewing the metservice information for how the cyclone will pass through the area, we have made the decision to close the school for Tuesday 14th due to health and safety.

Because we know some students will already be travelling to school we will remain open to supervise students onsite. Currently power is on at school, however we are having surgers and if the power goes out we will have to close. 

Update: re Cyclone

Kia ora e te whaanau,

After meeting with the Ministry of Education today, it is up to each school to make their own decision as to whether they should open or close for the emergency. Having looked at the risk we have decided it’s too soon to know if the cyclone will create a health and safety risk or not, therefore for now we will remain open tomorrow. We are aware that certain areas are still recovering from the last flood and heavy rain could impact these areas more. As a school, we support any parents who wish to keep their children home on Monday as a precautionary measure. The school will continue to monitor the conditions of the roads and power supply over the next couple of days, as significant changes in these two things could cause the school to close. Please make sure notifications for our facebook page and school app are turned on to ensure you receive any emergency information.

Lastly we have decided to postpone the whaanau conferences at the marae on Monday night as a precautionary measure. This night will be rescheduled for a time later in the term.

NETBALL REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN!

If your child is in years 5-13, they can play netball for the school! Our teams play on Saturday mornings at Pukekohe Netball courts from April to August. There is a team for everyone!
Registrations close on 17 february. Trials will be held for year 9-13 players and Year 7/8. Year 5/6 plays in age groups with their peers building a sound foundation of defensive and attacking netball skills.
Future ferns play later in the year, starting 27 October. They will have separate registrations.

Canteen Opening

Just a note that the Canteen will not be open for Y11-13 students this Friday. The Canteen opens as per normal from next Tuesday 7th Feb.

On Tuesday the 7th of February the school will be open to all students. The day will start at 8:50am in whaanau and classrooms, then will be followed by a poowhiri for new students, staff, and families at 9 am in the hall. We welcome all parents and whaanau who would like to attend this.

We know that this week has been very disruptive in more ways than one and we appreciate your continued patience and understanding. We are very much looking forward to having all students back at school and ready for a great year ahead!

Update on closure

Yesterday the Ministry of Education directed all schools under the Auckland Ministry of Education to close until the 7th of February, this includes Onewhero Area School. 

On the 7th of February, we will start with all students back on site. The day will start at 8:50 in whaanau and classrooms, then will be followed by a powhiri for new students, staff, and families at 9 am in the hall. The timetabled day will be Day 5.

We are in communication with the bus company regarding the condition of our roads and will confirm bus availability for the 7th closer to time.

CANTEEN NOTICE

This is a message from Vicky Jones our canteen manager. The Canteen will be open Thursday and Friday only this week – when we have the full school back on site.

Please ensure that students bring their own lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Our thoughts are with our community right now as we process the damage and loss this weekend has brought.

Thankfully, the school grounds are all fine, and we will still be able to open tomorrow for Years 11-13. 

We are aware of damage to the roads and we are communicating with the bus company about this. At this stage, buses will run as normal. If there is any change to this, we will let you know. 

As information about extra support for the community is passed to us, we will share it with you through our normal channels of facebook and the app. Please feel free to pass that information on to others who might need it.

Thursday 2nd is the whole school which will start with a poowhiri at 9 am for all new students, whaanau, and staff.
